Exploring Delta del Ebro

Exploring Delta del Ebro

The Delta del Ebro is one of the most exotic and unique landscapes of the whole Catalan territory. In the south of the country there’s a natural park of an incomparable plant and animal richness.

A delta is a geographical figure caused by the sedimentation and dragging of materials within the river flow. In the case of the Ebro Delta, this detail is not minor because it is a delta formed by the largest river in Spain, the Ebro River.

The Mediterranean climate of this area, one of the wettest in the country and in Europe, favors the development of a very specific type of animal and plant life. For this reason, many specialists visit the area to see and study exotic animals or birds that live in the Delta. Any visitor of the Delta can easily spot some flamingos, egrets or various kinds of ducks.

The Delta, and all the life it hosts, revolves around the river, but the Mediterranean Sea as well. The sea not only transforms the climate of the place, but also particularizes the composition of the soil and the water of the Delta. For that reason the inhabitants of the place have developed a very special type of cultivation: rice. The rice fields are spread throughout the landscape and give birth to our national dish, paella.

The Delta area is also known for its fish and especially its seafood. Seafood lovers can savor many types of crabs, prawns, clams and, especially, mussels.

Many families visit the Delta every weekend as it is a perfect place to relax, make small bike routes and see the natural dune beaches that can be found there.
